When my 2000 323ci BMW arrived at Difeo BMW, I figured that I was going to
stick with the stock stereo system. It wasn't till about a month
later when I decided that the stock system was unbearable. The sound
quality was just not dynamic enough for me. I figured since I had all my
aftermarket equipment from my previous truck and all I had to do was
purchase new wiring and dash kit, it was going to be easy to
implement an aftermarket stereo system in the BMW.
After about a week of thinking about the setup and other ideas, I
figured why not go and compete in sound off competitions. So I made
that my objective. But I had to keep in mind during the whole
process of the installation that I was leasing the vehicle. So just incase
I decide to turn the car in, I had to make sure that everything was able
to be put back into its original condition.
I wanted the car to have a crisp, clean sound. Loud wasn't a
priority at the moment but I later realized it was a must. I
decided to put one 12" Sub in a custom ported box. The sub will be
pushed by a 1200 watt amplifier at 4 ohms. Instead of replacing the
existing factory mounted mid-drivers and tweeters, I left them in
their location and amplified them with two 50x4 amps. The brain of
my whole system was the EPX2 by Rockford Fosgate. It enabled me to set
crossover points for each speaker including the Sub and tweeters and allowed me adjust
the frequencies on 28 different points.
As I
was nearing the end of the install, when I decided on purchasing a new amp
and adding another subwoofer in a custom duel sealed enclosure.
The reason for doing this was because the sound was getting trapped within
the trunk, as a result the bass wasn't getting to the rest of the vehicle.
So that is where I leave off. My overall goal, To get the stereo
system working!!!! Isn't that what everyone really wants.
